No. the drug-abuse and alcoholic communities are more prone to those things, respectively than the rest of society. the rest of society is more prone to ignore the real problems with non-rest-of-society communities.

Not in general. Howevre, there is a high amount of stress that comes with being a member of the gay community that has scewed some research and needs to be taken into account to explain some stereotypes. Coming out to friends, relatives, and coworkers can either go very well, or it can lead to loss of said friends, family, job, or even life.

I am not sure of any study regarding this issue, but as an observation of a couple of my Gay friends, I do notice it as being a little worse. it might be a result from the oppression they feel from some parts of society that reject their lifestyle.

No! I think the media and entertainment groups are responsible for that stereotype.

The answer is no. How does one reach such conclusion? drug and alcohol abuse affects society as a whole not a single group of individuals based on sexual orientation.....

Yes just like black people are all in gangs. Mexicans just eat tacos. White people all live in trailers. People are people. Gay. Straight. Black. White. If you have an addiction to something its not just because you have blue eyes or anything like that. Im sure its stressful to be gay. But not everyone turns to drugs or liquor.

Actually as I see it gay people are often more educated and social than "the rest of society ". However the stress of being in the closet could lead to drugs and alcool abuse.

Dunno. The 'gay community' I am in are fairly mature...we indulge in a puff of weed, and enjoy wine and spirits, but have never abused the privileges thereof - or are you referring to the old habit of 'poppers' (amyl nitrate) of the late 70's?

No. And finding people of the same sex sexually attractive doesn't make a community.

Is the gay community more prone to drug and alcohol abuse than the rest of society? You tell us, and see if it will fly! I don't think so

In many cases the gay bar is the primary place where gay people can meet one another and socialize. So in that respect, they are around alcohol quite often. Years ago I read a study that said that per capita there are more gay alcoholics, but I can't find it now. Of course straight people meet each other in bars and drink and some are alcoholics as well. It's just with gay people, sometimes the bar is the ONLY place to congregate with other gay people (especially in smaller cities which may not have gay community centers or groups in which to join). I did a quick search of the Internet and found this article: ezinearticles.com/ ?Alcoholism-in-the-Gay-Community &id= 365492 I'm sure there are more.
