Question: The increase in lawlessness, drug abuse, poverty etc in south africa, since apartheid has been abolished?

What do you think could have been done to prevent the massive decline of South Africa, for South Africans of all colours, when apartheid was abolished? Could anything have been done to make the transgression less damaging? Does South Africa have to decline into another bankrupt, hopeless African country before it has a chance at re- building? Personally I don't think it possible to rebuild given the politics, damage, sense of hopelessness, the arid land, despite it's mineral wealth. What can be done now? What could or should have been done? Edit: Rev, My thinking is similar to yours, despite how un PC it may be, I beleive it should have been governed over a longer period, It's all so complicated though, without foreign investment it was bound to spiral downwards. Schlitzy: That goes without saying, is your chosen subject, stating the obvious? neils: Do you think that real long term improvement is possible or probable? |

Many things could have been done. Africa is still the most exploited continent. The whites weren't doing them any favors in the first place so don't kid yourself. |

They should have made the transition to independence slower and given more help adjusting to their new position by implementing a stable form of government before leaving. also, ban missionaries from converting everyone to catholicism. |

When Mandela came to power, he had every good intention, including redistribution of land and resources to the blacks who had been marginalized for so long, etc. The IMF and the top corporate investors in South Africa threatened to pull all capital out of the country. He had to choose between following the capitalist globalizing hegemony, or having his nation become another Somalia. At best, good leaders can make the lives of we corporate slaves a bit better, but still within the framework of corporate control (such as US Democrats). At worse, they merely tighten the grip of the corporate masters (such as the US Republicans). No political leader can extract us from corporate control. That will require the people to stand for themselves, and be willing to suffer in the short term to see long term improvement. |

To understand that you would have to understand how the global monetary system works. When the big corporations move in with their economical hit men. It leaves some third world countries with a bigger national debt than their combined income. It's ridiculous what they are being allowed to do. Talk about the Mafia out of control. Stop buying products from big corporations using third world slave labor. Practicing Shaman... quantum physics rocks. |
