Are ethnic minorities really responsible for their chemical dependency when one considers the impact of social oppression and poverty?

Yes, of course, like what else?Did you think God made them do it? Don't You take responsibility for Your own actions? And, would you like it any other way? Love and kisses from the responsibels.

I think individuals are responsible for their drug abuse. Just because someone lives in poverty does not mean that they are forced into using or selling drugs, I don't buy that for a second. In fact in doesn't make sense at all, maybe if an individual didn't waste money on drugs then they wouldn't be living in such poor conditions. Social oppression and poverty are just excuses for people who are weak minded.

Is it an actual dependency? If it's not a dependency, then yes, they are responsible. If they are dependent on the drug, then the medical condition is one that impacts society and needs to be dealt with (just like heart disease, cancer and diabetes affects society at large). What do minorities have to do with it? In rural America, drug addition is more common among caucasians than the minorities. It's more an issue of poverty than racial head counts. Lastly, a lack of social oppression and poverty do not prevent chemical dependency. Just take a look at all the drug addicted celebrities or the drunk or drugged out Ivy League frat/ sorority kids.

How are they not responsible when dirt poor whites are supposed to know better? And if by social oppression you mean all the special privileges and opportunities they get that dirt poor whites don't, sign me and the rest of us up. Because our white privilege cards 'got lost in the mail'.

Every individual is responsible for their actions but I do believe that a child who is brought up seeing other people around them continuously drinking and doing drugs will be more likely to do it because it will seem like a normal thing to do. Abuse isn't just physical and some people grow up not having anybody teaching them anything but the wrong things and for some even when they become an adult and figure out they have been taught wrong they are already addicted so people should not judge minorities growing up in the ghetto without food, proper shelter, and without proper guidance. God did not intend children to raise themselves. We all have to be taught and programmed from childhood what is right and acceptable. So indirectly some kids from the ghetto are not fully to blame.

Yup. What's illegal for one person is illegal for all. I'm a minority (bi-racial), are you saying that I should be able to go out and do drugs without any consequences? Can I steal cars too? And rob people? Do you really want the courts to have lower standards for me just because of my skin color? Are you saying that the law should base their justice on what color a person's skin is? I thought we were trying to get past this kind of thing.

Every person is responsible for their own drug use. Rich people get involved in drugs and die... I mean how many stories have you heard of celebrities OD on heroine or what not? Poor people the same thing happens. People learn about drugs and decide for themselves if they want to take them or not. It's a choice that everyone has. Like for me... I was never pressured or talked into drugs. I read and studied and decided for myself that I don't think drugs are bad. Sure you may not agree with me but that is your choice. I know that drugs can ruin and kill people but they can do so much more.
