They get drunk and can't control themselves so, they get taken advantage of.

Europeans came in and displaced them. As a result their culture was marginalized. They suffered a lack of psychosocial integration. A result of this is addiction. Check out the link in my sources. Bruce K Alexander is psychologist at a university in Vancouver. He has an amazing book out about this.
