Alcoholism: Drug Abuse Facts

Question: In your opinion is alcoholism a disease or a choice?

Research found from a Gallop poll revealed that 90 % of the population surveyed believed that alcoholism is a disease. Although from my own personal research, I would say that more than 10 % believe that alcoholism is a choice. Those that advocate for the “choice model� also believe that by applying the “disease mode� strips alcoholics of their choice and responsibility which causes a threat to the health of the alcoholic. It has also been argued that alcoholism starts with choice. The choice to drink. After which, if the individual has the underlying disease, then they will continue their use of alcohol which will escalate to alcohol abuse, at which time the problem drinker gets diagnosed. Keeping in mind that diagnosis is usually only a guess. What physical signs and symptoms of alcohol dependence actually get measured? If alcoholism is a disease, then how do we know that the disease is present? One needs to consume copious amounts of alcohol (by choice) before a diagnosis can be made. It’s fair to say that one must choose to create the condition before it can be diagnosed. I sure think so.....

Its a choice. People can say the whole disease thing all they want, but the individual chooses to pick up the bottle.

Yes it's an addiction rather than a choice, Alcoholism is always incubated.

I agree with you, you cannot become a coke addict without a first decision to use the substance. sure people can be prone to addictions, but unless they use it, they won't have the problem. if you decide not to drink, you won't have the problem of any dependencies

"if " it is a disease, why is it the ONLY disease that is advertised so you can "get it "..? Ex. Budweiser the best "disease " money can buy ! ... "if " it is a disease, why do many States have specific and dedicated "State Stores " in which you can buy this "disease " (Pennsylvania, State run Liquor- "disease " Store...!!!) ...If you get sick from Alcohol it's because you decided to pick it up and drink it !

Its a choice, and by drinking too much, you become an Alcoholic. While some people drink but have self control, and no there limits.

Neither. Alcoholism is an addiction. What type of @sshat would call alcoholism a choice?
