Question: Why do you think alcoholism is so common among the native population?

To the first poster- Do you think that the first people's were too "innocent " and ignorant to not know how to make booze? Please. I live in a state where there are seven Indian reservations and I have Indian relatives. ( cousins) Much of the problem on their res is that alcoholism is a generational thing. Many families have a long history of it and a serious lack of medical facilities that are serious about treating alcoholism as a disease. They simply do not have the funding. Furthermore, many people self medicate. Their healthcare system is overwhelmed and underfunded and it is a common practice for many to drink as a form of pain control. Add poverty, unemployment and gambling ( lots of res's have casinos) to the mix and you have a lot of alcohol dependent people.

Because when christopher columbus came to america, he tried to pursuade them and ease them into giving them their lands. in order to do so, he gave them alchohol to alter their moods. their bodies had never been introduced to it before so they were very prone to becoming addicted to this substance.

Yes...alcoholism is common in the Native population, but it's just as common in a lot of other populations. Alcoholism affects all races, genders, ethnicities, economic and social groups, age categories. Meaning that alcoholism is a prevalent everywhere.

If your refering to native americans, i think its a way of life for them. every indian i know has some kind of alcohol issue.

It has nothing to do with Columbus or any other crap like that. The truth is that some groups have a genetic predisposition toward alcoholism. You could ask the same question about the Irish and the answer would be the same.
