Question: My parents and there religion and there alcoholism? i need opinions?

My parents are recovered alcoholic, 3 years to be exact. We are a christian family of 6, and we are all messed up from growing up in a dysfunctional family. 3 of us are drug addicts, 1 relies on her drug addict boy friend, 1 is an alcoholic, and im anorexic. Growing up my parents were always super christian, but how could they be if they were so messed up? After there recovery there still obsessively religious, and they pay no attention to the problems and they always say "just pray and god will fix everything ". Do you think there just using god and religion as a security blanket? How can god fix everything if they don't start to do something about the problems! oh and i'm not a religions person at all, they turn me off of it.

Some people just end up trading the bottle for the Bible. It's the same old game of irresponsibility and cheap thrills, just under a different name. They might FEEL better at first, but they don't always GET better. In fact, religion can turn a bad drug. People say a prayer as an act of surrendering all form of self-responsibility to some "higher power ", and get a feeling of bliss. This feeling of bliss leaves them wanting to believe anything else that the religion claims. But the initial "high " doesn't last, and like a drug, they have to keep "doing " more and more of religion to feel it again. Pretty soon they have to do more of it just feel normal. They end up relating less and less to people in the real world, and end up more miserable than when they started. One of the problems lies within the foundation of 12-step programs, which substance abusers are often forced to go into. 12-step programs are all based on the idea that the individual is powerless. What recovery programs should be doing is empowering the self TO conquer the addiction. Fortunately, there are much more effective alternatives to 12-step programs out there, such as: sossobriety.org/

This book was written by a priest in recovery. I don't think it will help them (you can never fix another persons addictions or "issues ") but it might help you when god becomes a drug amazon.com/ When-God-Becomes-Drug-Booth/ dp/ 0874777038 some selections from it holysmoke.org/ sdhok/ god-drug.htm

"we are all messed up from growing up in a dysfunctional family. " The best thing about people today is how EVERYTHING bad is someone else's fault. *sigh*.

I have no time for religion. However tell them this quote: " God helps those who help themselves ". In other words you have to start making an effort.

Just reading the holy scriptures, hearing them or acting religious doesnt make you a religious person, practicing it in real life is important, people do wrong, but they want to prove to the world they are right, but its ultmately God that has to be pleased and not the people around. Though upbringing is the responsibility of parents they do play a vital role, but after a certain age, they arent responsible for your behaviour, you hv to learn & know how to guide & control yrself. I am sorry if your family is all messed up, if nothing improves, you just have to keep yr self away from this mess. As a member you can get them councelling and make them attend the church/ mosque..whatever applicable as per yr religious belief, try to push them out of this addiction, if they dont wish to, then just keep yr self away. (Even if you manage to make one of them loose their bad habits, it would be a great start. Start making an effort now)

"My parents are recovered alcoholic, 3 years to be exact ". It sounds like God helped them. God can fix everything and prayer does work. It isn't going to happen without some effort on each persons part. Your parents aren't going to be able to solve everyone elses problems either. Eventually everyone has to take on their own responsibility and want help with their problems. So, work on your issues, and be their for the rest of your family. It sounds like it isn't that easy for your parents either, so try not to be too hard on them. They are still working on their problems of their own.

Regardless of how many thumbs down I get, please listen to what I'm saying: You are absolutely right, they are using their religion as a security blanket. They don't want to deal with the problems themselves, so they tell you to "let God fix it ". But let me tell you something: God can't do it alone. In order to get better, you have to actually work at it. God helps those who help themselves. I have family who are the exact same way, and when something goes wrong, they blame it on the devil. This line of thinking leads to one thing: no one takes responsibility for their actions or the consequences of said actions. So, in closing, if you want to fix your problems, don't try to rely on your parents, which obviously won't do you any good, but look in yourself for guidance and simply ask God for a little help every once in a while. Good luck, and I hope this helps at least a little.

There is no invisible super being who is going to miraculously fix their problems or yours. you can not fix their problems. you can only seek to fix your own. it sounds like you need to put some distance between you and your toxic family. no doubt you love them but it would be a waste of your life if you allowed yourself to be caught in such an unhealthy environment. PS. please seek professional help for the anorexia. it's a life threatening illness.

God/ Jesus can only do what you ask and many do not ask anything, and get nothing for asking for nothing. Ask not, get not. If you ask for help or change God/ Jesus will help or change if not you are choosing to do it on your own. So ask God/ Jesus to lead, teach and protect you your whole life and keep asking for these things. Or we tend to take back control and go our own way and this above happens. You choose to let God/ Jesus lead or you lead. One or the other and once we start leading God/ Jesus stops, until we ask him to lead, teach and protect again. So keep asking for these things and keep them in control and you life will prosper from it. Or do like the world, lead yourself and end up like them. Look around do you want it all through God/ Jesus or settle like the world on your own. take care. Your name: ask me anything, this is what God/ Jesus is saying to you.

I recommend praying the rosary for them on a daily basis. The rosary is God's preferred means for obtaining conversions. See the following promises. The rosary is explained here: medjugorje.org/ rosary.htm The fifteen promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary: 1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces. 2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. 3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against Hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. 4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. 5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish. 6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life. 7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church. 8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in Paradise. 9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary. 10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven. 11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary. 12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. 13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire Celestial Court during their life and at the hour of death. 14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only Son, Jesus Christ. 15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination. God bless! Dave
