No. Alcoholism is gluttony. And no, it is not true that anything that ends in "ism " is a religion. For example, Communism is politics. Racism is not religion. Neither is feminism.

Spirits today are liquors, in ancient times they were other various plants etc. (most of which are illegal today.) Which is why you sometimes hear people refer to going to the bar as going to church. Alcohol is a low brow weak form of spirituality, it activates the 2nd circuit out of 8 I believe it is, keeping one in a lower level of consciousness, compared with marijuana which will open up the 5th neurosomatic circuit, and a definite higher state of consciousness... most people spend their entire lives in the lower 4 realms of consciousness and can't even imagine what it's like to achieve a 6-7-8th level of awareness. Here's a nice video Sacred Beer & The Chatholic Church youtube.com/ watch?v= dbBS1LkqjdE

Dunno about the ism thing but religion is about worshiping something. Some kind of god, higher power or idol. If alcohol is your higher power then it is your god. Whatever is the thing you 'worship' then I guess yes, it is kind of a religion. The bible speaks of gluttons who worship the god of their belly. You can make anything a 'god', famous people, money alcohol... whatever is your main focus in your life is your god. It is the object of your devotion, it has a strong hold over you and you are subject to it.
