Question: Can catholics get a divorce because of alcoholism?
(Posted by: DAR76 on 2009-08-19 11:10:48)
If a Catholic divorces because of an alcoholic spouse (unwilling to get help) will they be excommunicated? Interesting comments. How could they get a marriage annulled if children were produced? |

The Bible only lists two (2) reasons acceptable for divorce. Alcoholism is not one of them. |

Yes and no. Divorce is a civil matter. Excommunication comes into the picture only if either spouse remarries. Alcoholism is often grounds for a Church annulment, BTW, thus opening the door to remarriage. |

No, divorce is allowed. It is not a sin. However, one is not allowed to re-marry unless one can get an annulment from a previous Christian marriage. |

Yes. Get the priest drunk and he will sign off on it. |

Anyone can get a divorce for any reason without getting excommunicated, the question is whether or not the Catholic church will give you an annulment so that you could get re-married in the Catholic Church. You would want to ask your local priest how that works. ***add on*** I have known many Catholic couples who have gotten a divorce and an annulment who also had children. I just don't know the process. Talk to your priest. He'll be able to answer all your questions. Good luck. |

No you get the divorce & the marriage becomes annulled (void) & the church sees it like the marriage never happened = annulment |

Catholics are not allowed to divorce within the church. It there is abuse and the spouse's life is endangered then they can be granted an annulment by the Archdiocese. It's like the church saying that the marriage never even happened. |

No thats the point of catholics... they want to screw you over as much as possible. don't care if the guy's a wifebeater or a drug addict... because god said so. they'll be doing the excommunicated a favor by the way |

Here in Brazil, Catholics can divorce as often as you like. Glad I am an evangelical Christian. |

Im not catholic but i do read the bible and to my interpretation, yes. if she is unproductive, violent, abusive, have no respect, doesn't care about family values, then yes, you can and should divorce her. now when you say alcoholic im thinking on the lines she is abusing alcohol. but if she just drinks and is fully aware of everything she does and she doesn't disrespect you, then no, you shouldn't divorce her. she is not causing danger to no one. only if she was causing danger or having behavioral issues, would i recommend divorce. |

Excommunication is just a word the Catholic church may do to a person that may be of a great threat to their religion. A lot from their congregation who deals in all sorts of big time crimes that should have been excommunicated are even god sponsors to every ceremony you could find what more of a plain divorcee? |

No, a Catholic who gets divorced is not excommunicated. Depending on the circumstances, they may not be allowed to receive Communion, though. Someone in this situation would probably benefit by meeting with their pastor to get further guidance. For marriage help, they could also try retrouvaille.org/ |
