Question: Should alcohol and drug abusing parents be allowed to have children.?
(Posted by: borderscot on 2008-01-20 00:01:06)
Why should people like this be allowed to bring children into this world. They are so ravaged out of their minds on their dependency, having to resort to crime and/ or prostituton to supprt thier habits. Is this really any upbringing for children, who do tend to learn from example and could well end up in the same situation at a much younger age. |

You can't stop people from breeding short of incarcerating them. Explain in a little more detail how your idea would work in reality. |

We would hope not, but they do and I don't think anyone could halt their reproductive abilities since this argument could be stretched to should people with AIDS be made to live on islands and not reproduce. It would never work; however, helping those with problems and creating mandatory programs and actually caring about people should be the way to go. |

Each case has to be judged seperately, but I see where you are coming from with this. Basically it depends on the welfare of the child. Is the child looked after, the home clean and safe, food to eat, a clean bed and clothing.........many factors. You hear of many famous people with drug and drink problems, that lose there children........................ |

I agree. it's not healthy, safe or fair for a child to be brought up in these conditions. however, it's a sad fact of life - and there are more of these kids everyday. |

If alcohol and drug abusing parents on the majority set bad examples for their children, but the children that are smart enough to know their parents are bad examples will just not follow in the same foot steps. |

You can't force birth control on them, BUT you can turn them in! Call CPS and get someone to look into it. |

Determining who qualifies to have children or not is a very slippery slope. Once this sort of thing gets started what's next? Should people with physical handicaps and mental illness not be allowed to have children? Pre World War II when Adolph Hitler had scientists create Zyclon B poison gas he tested it on the mentally ill population of Germany. He had his propaganda machine created a public service announcement justifying the so called mercy killing of the mentally ill under the premise killing they would be doing them a favor because they are not really living. Chemical addiction is an illness and should be treated as such. We can not fall into that trap of creating laws that would disallow people from having children. However parents that are deemed incapable of raising their children to the point that the children's lives are endangered should have their children taken away and placed in a safer environment not to punish the parents but to save the children. |
